Osteoporosis Screening
Osteoporosis literally means porous bones and is caused by loss of
bone substance. It starts naturally in individuals after about the age
of 40. This loss occurs in both men and women; it can be more marked
in women following the menopause. A fall in oestrogen production at
this time results in bone loss increase so osteoporosis is more common
in women than men. Osteoporosis can be associated with certain drugs
and some medical conditions. Lifestyle factors associated with
osteoporosis include smoking, lack of exercise, and a diet poor in
calcium. With osteoporosis comes increased risk of fracture. This is
not an inevitable part of ageing and much can be done to prevent and
treat osteoporotic fractures.
Osteoporosis can be diagnosed by undertaking a bone density scan. A
tiny amount of x-ray is used to measure the density of the lower
spine, hip and occasionally forearm. The equipment at Kingston
Hospital is a DEXA (dual x-ray absorptiometer) recommended by the
National Osteoporosis Society. This service is available to private
patients, both insured and self pay. The x-ray department offer
flexible appointments for the convenience of patients and appointments
are normally available within 2-3 working days. For self funding
patients the scan is £120. Patients can be referred by their own
doctor and we also accept self referrals.
Once you have had the scan a report will be sent to your doctor who
will discuss the results with you. They will advise you on any life
style changes or drug treatments if required.
